Endocrine system CH 10 Flashcards
Endocrine System
System of glands and associated organs that contain cells that produce hormones
Hormone translation in Greek
“excite”
Hormones are..
Molecules that regulate function of other cells or organ systems
Main function of the endocrine system is to
- regulate body development
2. interact with nervous system to regulate and coordinate body systems to promote homeostesis
PANCREASE produces :
Glucagon and Insulin
Glucagon
Increases blood glucose level
Insulin
Decreases blood glucose level
Lipid soluble hormones
Move easily through cell membranes to bind with receptors in the cell (cytoplasm or nucleus) . The Complex attaches to DNA and activates certain genes which produce protiens
Water soluble hormones
Can not pass through membranes . They bind with receptors on the cell surface which activate a second molecule in the cytoplasm which influence existing enzymes in the cell
Synergistic
when biological structures interact and makes response in the body greater
Ex.) Epinephrine and glucagon
Antagonistic
Working against each other
EX. pancreases secretes both glucagon and insulin
Neurosecretory cells
Specialized neurons that transmit and generate nerve impulse AND secrete hormones
**basically they function as neurons and endocrine cells
