Endocrine System B Flashcards
In general terms, what do hormones do?
hormones are chemical messengers that bring about a change to a target cell.
What are steroid and amino acid-based hormones?
steroid based hormones are hormones that can enter the cell membrane directly, amino acid based hormones have to attach to a receptor before they can enter the cell membrane and bring about a change.
Why do steroid and amino acid-based hormones have receptors in different locations on/in their target cells?
they have receptors in different locations because they bind in different spots. the steroid acid-based hormones can pass through the membrane and bind to the intracellular fluids, and the acid-based hormones bind to cell membrane receptors, because they can’t pass through.
What are first messenger and second messenger modes of hormone action?
the first messenger system: hormone cell enters target, the hormone binds with the receptor, and the hormone + receptor activates genes on DNA.
- the second messenger system: hormone binds with receptor in cell membrane, bindings of the hormone cause a change in the second molecule = second messenger, this then alters the cell function.
