endocrine System Flashcards
Mixed gland in our bodies
- Islets of langerhans .
- Leyding cells .
- Corpus lutetium .
Endocrine glands aggregation
- Cords & clumps .
2. Follicles ( thyroid glands ) & the intermediate lobe of pituitary gland .
Pituitary gland weight
0.5 g in adult
Pituitary gland parts and their embryonic origin
- adenohypophysis (ant. lobe ) —> rathke’s pouch .
2. Neurohypophysis ( post. lobe ) —> diencephalon of the developing brain .
Pituitary gland histology
- Capsule of c.t .
- Adenohypophysis :
a. Pars distalis .
b. Pars tubularis .
c. Pars intermedia . - Neurohypophysis :
a. Pars nervosa .
b. Fundibular stalk .
c. Median eminence .
Pars distalis histology
- Cords of epi. cells (hormone secreting cells):
a. Chromophils ( acidophilic & basophilic ) .
b. Chromophobs . - Reticular fibers .
- Fenestrated & sinusoidal capillaries .
PAS stain
- Acidophilic —> bright purple color .
2. Basophilic —> bluish color .
Chromophobs
- Weakly staining .
- Few or no granules .
- Not yet differentiated into hormone producing cells .
Acidophilic cells
- Somatotropes .
2. Mammo(lacto)tropes .
Basophilic cells
- Thyrotropes .
- Gonadotropes .
- Corricotropes .
Pars tubularis histology
- Gonadotropes , thyrotropes & chromophobes .
2. Hypophyseal portal vessels .
Pars intermedia histology
- Hypophyseal cleft .
2. Large pale cells surround follicles filled with colloid material .
Hormone secreted by pars intermedia
MSH ( melanocyte stimulating hormone )
Upper section of beurohypophysis above pars tubularis
Median eminence .
Part of neurohypophysis connects the pars nervosa with the base of the brain .
Infundibular stalk
The pars nervosa differs from adenohypophysis
It does not have secretory cells that secret hormones .
Pars nervosa histology
- Neural tissue
a. unmylinated axons of supraoptic nuclei .
b. Pituicytes ( highly branched glial cells ) —>
most abundant . - Herring bodies : dilated area of the terminal
portion of axons ( neurosecretory granules)
