Endocrine System (2.03,2.04) Flashcards
Pituitary gland
located in the brain. Secretes human growth hormones and influences all other hormone secreting glands.
Pineal gland
located at the base of the cerebrum. Secretes melatonin.
Thyroid gland
located in the neck. Regulates metabolism.
Pancreas
controls levels of sugar in blood.
Gonads
sex glands. Secrete hormones that regulate sexual behavior and reproduction.
Adrenal glands
located on top of kidneys. Secrete over 30 hormones.
Case study
tracking a patient or group
Lesioning
Done to animals. Sees how different parts of the brain are affected.
Brain stimulation
Similar to lesioning, but done to humans.
CAT scan
takes 3D x-rays of brain in order to see the structure of the brain.
MRI
takes images of slices of the brain. Uses magnets to detect where tissue is in order to see the structure of the brain.
EEG
shows brain waves. Reads electrical activity to show functions of the brain. Usually used for sleep studies.
PET
uses radioactive glucose to localize activity in the brain.
fMRI
reads where activity is localized in the brain.
