endocrine system Flashcards
Endocrine system
regulatory and communication system, structures and cells secrete hormones, transported by blood to specific receptors on distant target signals
Types of glands
Endocrine glands and exocrine glands
endocrine glands
ductless glands; secrete hormones; products work at distance
examples of endocrine glands
pituitary glands, pineal glands, thyroid glands, adrenal glands, thymus
exocrine glands
glands with ducts; do not secrete hormones (non endocrine); products work locally on a nearby surface; do not secrete hormones
examples of exocrine glands
sweat, tear, and salivary glands
Protein hormones
most hormones, e.g. insulin, glucagon, thyroid hormone
lipid hormone
from cholesterol; e.g. sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone, testosterone_
Non - tropic hormones
do not stimulate other endocrine glands; e.g. growth hormone
Tropic hormone
stimulate endocrine glands to secrete hormones; e.g. thyroid stimulating
Gonadotropic hormones
hormones, stimulate gonads (primary sex organs) testes and ovaries
Hypothalamus
directs anterior pituitary by secretion of 6 hormones; directs posterior pituitary by nervous signals; synthesizes 2 hormones of posterior pituitary
anterior pituitary
secretes 6 hormones
