Endocrine System Flashcards
What does the endocrine system consist of?
Glands & Hormones
What are hormones?
Hormones are chemical messengers that regulate certain cells & organs.
How are hormones regulated?
By negative feedback.
How are hormones excreted?
Hormones are continually excreted in the urine & broken down mostly by liver enzymes.
Where are the key components of hormones?
Hypothalamus & Pituitary glands.
What does the hypothalamus connect to?
Nervous system & endocrine system.
What does the hypothalamus contain?
Receptors that monitor hormones, nutrients & ion levels.
The pituitary gland has 2 important parts. What are they?
Anterior pituitary
Posterior pituitary
What is the anterior pituitary glands function?
Releasing hormones travel from the hypothalamus VIA a capillary network to the anterior pituitary.
What is the posterior pituitary gland function?
The posterior pituitary functions as a storage area for ADH & Oxytocin which are produced by the hypothalamus.
