Endocrine System Flashcards
What does the thyroid gland release and what do they do?
T3 and T4 - released in response to cold, exercise, malnutrition, sleep, stress and low plasma glucose levels - they increase metabolism and heat production
Calcitonin - released due to increased calcium levels - decreases amount of calcium re absorbed from kidney
What does the thyroid gland release and what do they do?
Adrenaline + noradrenaline - fight or flight - increases HR, dilates vessels of essential organs, constricts less essential, increases metabolic rate + dilates pupils
Corticosteroids - long term stress hormone
Glucocorticoids - increases metabolism, suppresses inflammatory and immune responses
Mineralocorticosteroids - maintains water balance and electrolyte balance
