What are symptoms of hyperthyroidism?
Weight loss, increased appetite, heat intolerance, heart palpitations, tachycardia, sweating
What agent should be used during the first trimester of pregnancy for hyperthyroidism?
Propylthiouracil
What is first line for hyperthyroidism?
Methimazole due to lower hepatotoxicity compared to PTU though not necessarily more efficacious
When are iodine based therapies indicated for hyperthyroidism?
Before surgery during resection or during thyroid storm
What is the clinical presentation of hypothyroidism?
Cold intolerance, dry skin, fatigue, weight gain, bradycardia, slow reflexes
What special populations would you want to lower the dose of levothyroxine therapy?
50-60 years of age, consider 50 mcg/day
Existing cardio disease consider 12.5-25 mcg/day
What therapeutic agents are used for acromegaly?
Dopamine agonists (bromocriptine, cabergoline) and somatostatin analog (octreotide) which decreases GH production
What therapeutics are used refractory to surgical resection of tumor for hyperprolactinemia?
Dopamine agonists (Cabergoline, bromocriptine)
