Endocrine Drugs Flashcards
What are hormones?
Chemical substances produced in the body that controls and regulates the activity of certain cells or organs.
This hormone inhibits urine production and has vasoconstriction effects
ADH/ Vasopressin
This hormone increases secretion of IGF-I for bone and muscle growth
Growth Hormone
What is the hormone produced by the thyroid?
Thyroid hormone
What gland/tissue produces Aldosterone and Cortisol?
Adrenal Cortex
What gland/tissue produces Adrenaline?
Adrenal Medulla
What is the function of Insulin and Glucagon have?
Regulation of blood glucose
What gland/tissue produces insulin and glucagon?
Pancreas
This is used to initiate labor, promote delivery of placenta and control post-partum hemorrhage
Oxytocin
What are glucocorticosteroids used for?
Increase the availability of glucose; Potent immunosuppressants used to prevent organ-transplant rejection; Used to promote lung maturation in premature infants
What are Thioamides used for?
Prevent formation of thyroid hormone; Inhibit conversion of T4 to T3
What is glucagon’s pharmacolologic action?
Increases blood glucose levels by increasing the breakdown of glycogen into glucose, decreasing glycogen synthesis enhances the synthesis of glucose
