Cardiovascular Drugs Flashcards
How do you know someone has hypertension?
They have a persistent systolic pressure of greater than 140mmHg and/or a diastolic pressure of greater than 90mmHg
What are diuretics?
Drugs that accelerate the rate of urine formation that results to the removal of sodium and water from the body
What is angina pectoris?
Chest pains
What causes chest pains?
Anaerobic metabolism that increases
production of lactic acid which stimulates pain receptors
What is the most effective treatment for exertional angina?
Beta-blockers
This is the pathologic state in which the heart is unable to pump in sufficient amounts from the ventricles to meet metabolic needs
Heart Failure
What is the oldest group of cardiac drugs, came
from foxglove or Digitalis plant?
Cardiac Glycosides
What are Dysrhythmias?
Any deviation from the normal rhythm of the heart
What is ECG and its function?
An electrocardiogram, it records the electric signals in the heart to see how the heart is functioning
This is used as a topic anesthetic is with added epinephrine to control bleeding in the area. Never used intravenously and also used to treat cardiac conditions
Lidocaine
These inhibit the action or formation of clotting
factors and prevents clots from forming
Anti-coagulants
These prevent platelet plugs from forming by inhibiting platelet aggregation
Antiplatelet
These alter platelet function without preventing the platelets from working
Hemorrheologic
These breaks down clots and thrombi that have already formed
Thrombolytic
These are hemostatic drugs that promote blood coagulation
Anti-fibrinolytic
