Endocrine Disruptors Flashcards
Endocrine system
Consists of cells that secrete hormones into bodily fluids, the hormones, and hormone receptors. Hormones are chemicals produced by all multicellular organisms to send messages from one cell to another and impact growth, reproduction, immune system, mood, metabolism, cell death, etc. (estrogen, testosterone, insulin, cortisol, thyroid hormone) Are present in extremely small amounts.
Hormone receptors
Proteins with a “pocket” that the hormone fits into with high specificity
Endocrine disruptors
1) Mimic: fool body into over-responding or to respond at inappropriate times (AGONIST)
2) Block: prevent a hormone from accessing receptor, preventing response (ANTAGONIST)
3) Stimulate or inhibit hormone secretion
