EM Radiation, Atmosphere, Solar Radiation Flashcards
Solar energy
Travels at the speed of light (3 x 10^8 m/s)
Photon
Particle of energy from the sun
The story of organisms on early earth
The universe was hot and desolate except for Archaebacteria, which produced so much oxygen that it became a pollutant to them. Blue green algae could use the oxygen and became abundant while Archaebacteria relocated to safer locations (such as within other organisms like algae, which were the first multicellular organisms). Early cells were, therefore, living under constant UV radiation, causing mutations, so they lived in the water.
Calculations
1) c = λ v
2) E = hv
Plank’s constant
h = 6.63 x 10^-34 Js
Natural GHE vs Enhanced GHE
Many greenhouse gases occur naturally in the atmosphere, but the effects of these atmospheric gases can be enhanced by the gases emitted by humans contributing to climate change
