endocrine control Flashcards
what are hormones
hormones are chemical substances produced by glands, carried by the blood which affects the activity of one of more specific target organs and is destroyed by the liver
how are endocrine glands different from typical glands
endocrine glands produce and secrete hormones, and are ductless as hormones are directly secreted into the blood stream to be distributed around the body
How is the pancreas both an exocrine and endocrine gland?
the cells of the islets of langerhans are endocrine glands that produce insulin and glucagon, which are secreted directly into the bloodstream. the exocrine glands in the pancreas produce digestive enzymes and bicarbonate, which are secreted into the pancreatic duct and to the duodenum
