Endocrine Case Study Flashcards
What is ketoacidosis?
Fats used for energy; ketonuria, acetone breathe (lower pH)
A child with type 1 diabetes has been diagnosed with ketoacidosis. What lab finding would be consistent with this
Serum ph: 7.24 is indicative of ketoacidosis
Normal blood pH levels
7.35-7.45
What are ways you can monitor effectiveness of insulin therapy
Serum glucose and urine glucose testing
Urine glucose testing
Not as effective because glucose does not appear in the urine until serum glucose levels are well above the optimum range.
Usually done when when testing for ketones, blood sugar is 240 or higher
Blood glucose testing
Provides excellent method of insulin adjustment
Normal blood glucose levels
80-120 mg/dl
What is the effect of increase excessive on insulin needs
Reduce insulin (exercise lowers blood sugar)
Kids who exercise are At greater risk for
Hypoglycemia
A 2 yr old child has just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The nurse is providing education to the parents regarding signs of hypoglycemia. What should the nurse include in her teaching?
Childs behavior will resemble a burst of anger or temper tantrum
A nurse is providing education to 4 sets of parents whose children have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The nurse should provide follow up education to the parents who state that they will perform which action?
Parents of a 2 yr old “we will have our daughter prick her finger for each glucose test.” Two yr olds Are too young to prick their own fingers for glucose testing
Children can do their own glucose testing
At age 4-5 yrs with supervision
Child can administer insulin
At 9 yrs old with supervision
Children can draw up their own insulin at what age
11-12 yrs with supervision
Preschoolers can
Identify feelings associated with hypoglycemia and describe it (develop code word between child when they feel like blood sugar is low)
