Endocrine Flashcards
What is a hormone
Secreted by ductless glands, allows distal cells to communicate
3 classes of hormones
1) Peptides and proteins
2) Amines
3) Steroids
Tropic hormone function
Regulates the production and secretion of other hormones
Non-tropic hormone function
Acts on a non-endocrine target tissue
How are hormone levels regulated
Feedback loops
Role of the pineal gland
Controls the circadian rhythm (changes in an organism over a 24 hour cycle of night vs day)
What hormone does the pineal gland secrete
Melatonin, 10x higher during period of darkness
What hormones are released by the posterior pituitary
Oxytocin and vasopressin
What controls the release of posterior pituitary hormones
The hypothalamus through its neural connection using neuron excitement
What is the hypothalamus-hypophyseal port
System of blood vessels in the brain that connect the hypothalamus to the anterior pituitary, allows for transport of hormones
