Endo Flashcards
Diagnostic criteria for DM
A1C >6.5
Fasting glucose > or = to 126
2 hr random glucose > or = to 200
Symptoms of hyperglycemia (polyuria, polydipsia, polyphagia)
A1C check q
Q 3 months until controlled, then q 6 months
Goal 6.5 or 7. Elderly < 8
Thyroid check tsh q
Q 6-8 weeks. When stable check Q 12 months
Don’t treat subclinical - recheck in 6-8 weeks
This class ends in “-flozin” and blocks glucose reabsorption in the proximal nephrons
SGLT2 inhibitors
Metformin works by
Decreasing gluconeogenesis and decreasing insulin resistance
Addison’s disease
The adrenal cortex produces cortisol and Aldosterone. Aldosterone regulates sodium retention and potassium excretion so we would expect hyperkylemia (high K) and low sodium (Na)
What diabetes med classes are cardio protective?
GLP-1 (-tide) and SGLT-2 inhibitors (-flozin)
