- A geographic area that have no mainstream grocery stores
- Have an imbalance of food choice- a heavy concentration of fringe food high in salt, fat, sugar
- Residents of food deserts suffer worse diet related health outcomes such as: obesity, heart disease, premature death

Can support a healthy diet – they sell an assortment of healthy fresh foods (produce, fruit, dairy and meats)

Fast food restaurants, convenience stores, gas stations
- Sell ready made, fast, boxed and other types of food healthy food is not the primary
- Foods are usually high in salt, fat and sugar very limited in nutritional value
