END OF YEAR ASSESSMENT Flashcards
Enzyme
a protein that functions as a biological catalyst
Lock and Key method & active site
active site is specific for the substrate. Enzymes are very specific and can only catalyse for one type of reaction
Denaturing
an enzyme will denature if it is exposed to extremes of pH, temperature and concentration of solution. Once denatured, it cant fit with any substrates.
Amylase
breaks down starch
Lipase
break down of fatty acids
Protease
break down of protein
test for protein
Biuret solution
test for reducing sugars
Benedict’s solution
Diffusion
the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration down the concentration gradient through a semi permeable membrane.
Osmosis
the movement of water from an area of high concentration to low concentration down the concentration gradient through a partially permeable membrane.
Active Transport
movement of particles from low to high concentration against the concentration gradient. this process requires energy.
Eukaryotic cell
- animals and plants
- has a nucleus
Prokaryotic cell
- bacteria only
Sperm Cell
- haploid nucleus
- acrosome
- mitochondria packed middle piece
- tail for swimming
Egg Cell
- contains nutrients for embryo
- contains genetic material for female
