Cells Flashcards
What is contained in the nucleus?
Contains DNA/genetic material arranged in chromosomes
What is the function of DNA?
Control cells activities and the synthesis of proteins
What is the function of ribosomes?
Protein synthesis
Describe the difference between a eukaryotic cell and a prokaryotic cell?
Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus prokaryotic cells don’t
How do you bacterial cells differ from plant and animal cells?
No nucleus, plasmid DNA, may have a flagellum
What is a specialised cell?
They have one job only
How is an egg cells specialised for its function?
Egg cell is packed with nutrients to feed an embryo, it has a haploid nucleus
How was your sperm cells specialised for it to function?
Sperm cells have a haploid nucleus, a tool for swimming, extra mitochondria for the tail and an Aqua zoom in the head containing enzymes to break into the egg.
Why are ciliated cells specialised?
They have tiny hairs on the surface that move substances into the body such as mucus in the lungs
What is the stem cell?
A cell that can develop into any type of cell
Where do we find stem cells in humans and plants?
Humans-embryos and bone marrow? Plans-meristem
What does a growth chart show?
Growth over time
What advantages do electron microscopes have over light ones?
They have a much higher magnification and resolution
What advantages to light microscopes have all the electron ones?
They can magnify living specimens without destroying them
Explain how electron microscopy has enabled us to see the cell structures with more clarity and detail than in the past?
It is possible to see and study the structure is an organelle is inside cells to study the roles of structures inside cells and organelles
