End Of Unit Questions Flashcards
Give 3 reasons to explain why a person may be malnourished?
They eat too little, they eat too much therefore receiving more energy than they’re using, they do not exercise enough, not the right amount of nutrients
Give three factors that affect how much energy a person needs
Inherited factors, metabolic rate, size of person, sex of person, pregnancy, breast feeding, amount of exercising
What is meant by metabolic rate and what factors affect the rate?
Metabolic rate is the rate of reaction within our cells and factors that affect it include inherited factors, exercise and muscle to fat ration
What is a pathogen?
A microorganism that causes an infectious disease by reproducing in your body, commonly bacteria and viruses
What is an antibiotic?
A drug people take to kill bacteria
Why is it difficult to produce medicines to destroy viruses?
Viruses reproduce in your cells so treating the virus could be a risk for your cells or tissues
What do we mean by a balanced diet?
Diet containing correct amounts of nutrients needed to keep healthy
How are the ideas of Semmelweis used in modern hospitals?
Everyone is hospitals should wash their hands to prevent the spread of pathogens
What is meant by a mutation of a pathogen?
A mutation is a change in gene
How is a pandemic different from an epidemic?
Pandemic is a worldwide disease and epidemic is a country wide disease
Why don’t doctors give antibiotics for mild throat infections?
The pathogen will become resistant to the antibodies much faster so they will soon have no effect on the pathogen
Explain how bacteria develop antibiotic resistance?
They use natural selection to let the resistant strains of bacteria develop and the non resistant strain to die
How does a person develop immunity following vaccination?
Their white blood cells respond the the pathogen in the vaccine so they already know which antibodies to make if needed so they can quickly destroy the pathogen
