End Feel Flashcards
capsular end feel
normal
Produced by caps &/or associated ligaments
Firm sensation with some give in it
as if 2 pieces of rubber were being squeezed together
bony EF
normal
Produced by bone to bone approximation. Abrupt halt to the movt when 2 hard surface meet.
soft tissue approximation EF
normal
Compression of tissue produced by contact of 2 ms bulk
elastic EF
normal
Produced by ms-tendon unit
Stretching ms-tendon
Early capsular (hard) capsular EF
abnormal
joint hypomobility
Firmer sensation occurring before normal EROM
Secondary to arthrosis or ligs/caps scar tissue from tear (micro-macro)
Generally accompanied by a decreased ROM in that direction
Early bone to bone (or bony) EF
abnormal
Hard EF before EROM
Osteophytes, abnormal joint contours
Early elastic (soft tissue stretch) EF
abnormal
Occur earlier than expected
Adaptive shortening of ms-tendon unit
Soft capsular EF
abnormal
joint hypermobility/instability
Capsular resistance less than expected
Generally accompanied by an increased ROM in that direction
Gr III lig sprains, feels like it can go for ever
Muscle spasm EF
abnormal
Involuntary ms contraction
Reflex ms contraction second to nociceptors irritation
Sudden stop of movt often accompanied by pain
Protective mechanism
Secondary to recent trauma, gr II ms tears or hypermobility
*not the same as early elastic - is a protective mechanism
- for if area is irritated and needs protection mostly for acute conditions
Boggy EF
abnormal
Secondary to viscous liquid (blood) within jt
Squishy sensation at EROM ie: haemarthrosis at knee
springy block EF
abnormal
Produced by disc or meniscus
Rebound felt at end ROM
empty EF
abnormal
what is the normal hip EF?
All capsular except for flexion which is soft tissue approximation
