Why did enclosure happen???

A
  • Late 1400’s and early 1500’s showed an increase in demand for wool and cloth
  • Trade made up 90% of English exports

Why was this a problem???

A
  • Land owners switched from farming crops to enclosing land and farming sheep to make more money
  • Fewer farmers were needed for sheep
  • Lead to many peasants being forced to leave their village

A
  • Those in favour (the beneficiaries) insisted it was necessary for economic growth

  • Lead to depopulation and an increase in vagabonds (homeless people)
  • Increase in crime

  • Henry’s parliament introduced 2 laws in 1488 and 1489 which were deemed anti-enclosure
