Emzymes Flashcards
What is an enzyme?
Organic Catalysts
Proteins which speed up chemical reactions.
Structure of Enzymes?
All enzymes are proteins with specific active sights.
Function of Enzymes?
Lower activation energy of a chemical reaction.
3 Enzyme facts:
1) each enzyme has an active site
2) enzymes are VERY specific
3) enzymes are revycled
Activation Energy
Energy needed to start chemical reaction.
Induced fit model
A slight change in shape to Create a tight fit.
Lock and key model
Substrate fits like a key in a lock.
Factors that affect enzymatic speed:
Ph Temp. Substrate Enzyme concentration Cofactors Feedback inhibition
Feedback inhibition:
Ed products control action when end product binds to enzyme and no longer functions
Inhibitor:
A molecule which stops the enzyme
Competitive:
Bind to the active sight, an be removed when substrates gang up
Non competitive
Bind to separate active sights and change have of normal active sights
