Formative Appraisal
Involves gathering continuous data on an employee’s performance. The data gathered is low stakes, meaning it will likely not affect an employee’s employment and it is gathered for the sole purpose of helping workers quickly make improvements. Employees are actively involved in self-reflection throughout this ongoing process.
Summative Appraisal
This is appraisal generally conducted annually or at the end of a large project. It has the purpose of measuring the overall performance of an employee and with that, make decisions related to pay or promotion. It is high stakes, determining pay, promotion and employment being continued.
360-Degree Feedback
This is when an employee receives comprehensive feedback gathered from a range of internal and external sources to the business. Typically it is done through anonymous surveys.
Self-Appraisal
This involves employees evaluating their own performance. It is typically combined with evaluations from managers to offer a comprehensive view of an individual’s performance. It promotes 2-way communication between manager and employee.
