Anxiety
A chronic sense of fear, worry or despondency that persists in the absence of real threat.
Depression
A state of mental disturbance, characterised by negative affect.
Emotional Intelligence
The ability to motivate oneself and persist despite frustration, to control impulse and delay gratification, to regulate mood and keep distress from overwhelming, to empathise and hope.
Emotional Expression
The presentation of different emotional states for the purposes of communication, social development etc.
Emotions: Functions
To help us cope, communicate feelings, social interaction, development.
Flow
A mental state derived from full immersion/involvement/engagement and success in an activity.
Csikzentmihalyi.
NB pleasure is retrospective.
Happiness
A mental state of positive affect.
Hope
A belief that we can find a path to our goal using our skills, abilities or persistence.
Life Satisfaction
A measure of subjective well-being.
Linked with psychological needs - meeting them lead to vitality, satisfaction and empowerment.
Optimism
A positive attitude or disposition that something good will happen, regardless of abilities.
Pessimism
A negative attitude or disposition that bad things will happen, regardless of abilities.
Pleasure
A rush of dopamine in the reward system. Subjective experience.
Linked with the experience of flow.
Stress
Pressure/tension experience in the absence of coping.
