Q

What is the two factor theory of emotion?

A

Formed by Schachter and Singer in 1962, this theory theorised that people experienced physiological arousal and that their emotional response was based on their interpretation of the situation. This suggests that people experience the same level of physiological arousal in various situations, regardless of the emotion. The way that people react to the situations is based on cognitive assessments of the situations.

Q

What is the appraisal theory of emotion?

A

Richard Lazarus invented the Appraisal Theory of Emotion in 1982. This suggests that the brain goes through two stages of processing when it encounters a stressor. The primary appraisal is assessing whether the situation or thing is harmful, threatening or challenging. The secondary appraisal is whether the individual can cope with stress, and what the alternatives to the situation are. This theory exposes whether or not individuals can cope with different situations, and is a slower response to stress.

Q

What are the two pathways in Le Doux’s Biological Model and what brain structures are used?

A

Le Doux’s Biological Model consists of the long route and short route.

The short route goes from the thalamus to the amygdala. This shows a quick emotional response to stimuli.

The long route goes from the thalamus to the sensory cortex, then to the hippocampus, then to the amygdala. This process provides a more appraised situation.
