perception or feeling that one is worse off than others
General Adaptation Syndrome
Alarm reaction - body’s initial reaction to a stressor (sympathetic nervous system activates)
Resistance - body attempts to adapt to ongoing stressor
Exhaustion - body becomes vulnerable to burnout or illness
Ways to reduce stress
Aerobic Exercise - activities that increase heart and lung fitness
* Running, swimming, cycling
Mindfulness Meditation - focusing attention on the present moment in a non-judgmental and accepting way
How does stress alter immune function?
-surgical wounds heal more slowly in stressed people
-stressed people are more vulnerable to colds
-stress can hasten the course of disease
What is coping?
alleviating stress using emotional, cognitive, or behavioural methods
Problem-focused coping
attempting to alleviate stress directly by changing the stressor or the way we interact with it
Emotion-focused coping
attempting to alleviate stress by avoiding or ignoring a stressor
Personal control
a sense of controlling our environment rather than feeling helpless
Learned helplessness
learning to believe that one has no control over events after experiencing helpless situations
External locus of control
belief that outside forces determine our actions (fate, luck, influence of others)
Internal locus of control
belief that we control our own actions
Self control
ability to control impulses and regulate short-term urges in favour of long-term rewards
