Emission Spectroscopy Flashcards
Why are neon signs and flame tests different colours
Flame tests and neon signs emit a colour, they don’t absorb light and reflect one colour
How does emission spectroscopy work in simple form
If energy is provided to atoms in the form of either heat or electricity, electrons absorb that energy and use it to promote themselves. As they fall from promotion, they releases and electromagnetic wave
What three parts of the EM spectrum do the waves released in emission spectroscopy originate
Infra-red, visible and ultra-violet
What is a trend in the energy levels as they get further away from the nucleus
They become closer together
What is the trend in the further the electrons fall from where they are promoted to and the frequency of wave released
The further the electrons fall, the greater the energy released and therefore the greater the frequency
What is the Balmer series
Electrons that are promoted and fall to energy level 2. They release visible light
What is the Lyman series
Electrons that are promoted and fall to energy level one. They release waves in the ultra-violet spectrum
What is the Paschen series
Electrons that are promoted and fall to energy level 3. They release waves in the infra-red spectrum
Why is there a convergence limit to each of the emission spectroscopy
The energy levels get closer together and so the difference in the amount of energy released gets less and less and so they release very similar frequencies
Equation for energy with Plancks constant and frequency
Energy = Plancks constant x frequency
Equation relating frequency, speed of light and wavelength
Speed of light = frequency x wavelength
