metaphor used to describe the divide between the communist countries of Eastern Europe and the capitalist democratic countries of Western Europe
first used by Winston Churchill in 1946 in his famous “iron curtain” speech

stalin intended to establish a soviet friendly regime in poland, which would prevent the possibility of another invasion of russia
pro-soviet Lublin regime was set up to take control of poland post-war. In contrast, the US and Britain backed an exiled polish government based in london.
