Emergent Properties of Water Flashcards
Four Properties of Water
Cohesive ability, Moderating temperature, Expansion upon freezing, a universal solvent
Cohesion
Water sticking to itself
Adhesion
Water sticking to something else
Surface Tension
How difficult it is to break or stretch the surface of a liquid
Transpiration
The evaporation of water into the atmosphere; drawing water out of the leaves and sending it out, repeating the process
How does water moderate temperature?
It absorbs heat to help cool down an environment or it releases heat to help warm up an environment
High Specific Heat
The amount of heat that must be absorbed or lost to change its temperature by 1 degree C
Does water have a low or high specific heat?
A High Specific Heat
Is ice more or less dense than water?
Less; that’s why it floats
Why is it important that ice floats instead of sinks?
Because by floating, it protects the organisms that live underneath it; it keeps the water just warm enough so the organisms can thrive instead of freezing, themselves
Solution
Mixture of two or substances
Solvent
The dissolving agent
Solute
The substance that gets dissolved
How does salt dissolve in water?
The water goes in there and literally rips it apart. The O clings to the Na and the H clings to the Cl, bc they’re opposite charges
Hydrophilic
Likes water
