Anatomy of an Atom Flashcards
Atom
The smallest unit of matter
Contents and charges of an atom
Protons = Positive Neutrons = None Electrons = Negative
Dalton
Unit of weight used to measure atoms
Atomic Number
The amount of protons within an atom
Atomic Mass
The weight of an atom (the number of protons and neutrons combined)
Isotope
An uneven atom; the number of protons do not equal the number of neutrons
Electron Shells
Inner shell, sphere, holds 2 electrons
Outer shell, valence shell, dumbbell, holds 8 electrons
Valence electrons
Electrons in the outermost shells
Covalent Bond
A bond where two atoms share valence electrons
Single Bond
Sharing only one pair of electrons, such as in H-H
Double Bond
Sharing two pairs of electrons, such as in O=O
Electronegativity
How strongly that atom pulls electrons to itself
Polar Covalent Bond
Electrons are shared unequally between atoms
Non-polar Covalent Bond
Electrons are shared equally between atoms
Ionic bond
Bond between ions
Ion
Fully charged atoms; either fully positive or fully negative
Cation
Positively charged ion
Anion
Negatively charged ion
Hydrogen Bonds
Bonds between water molecules and other atoms (mainly electronegative atoms)
Van der Waals Interaction
Little forces that allow a gecko to walk up a wall
