When do they form?
When eustatic rise in sea level takes place faster than isostatic rebound
What is a ria?
A river valley that has been flooded by the eustatic sea level rise
What are their two main characteristics?
- Open to the sea
2. Partially submerged
How large is a ria?
Can be lots of miles long
Example of a ria?
Portsmouth harbour which is nearly 3 miles wide - protected by the isle of white
What is the cross section of a ria like?
Similar to a river in its lower course
What are fjords?
Submerged glacial valleys
What do fjords have?
Steep cliff like valley sides and water is usually deep
What’s a fjords cross section like?
U-shaped

Sogne fjord in Norway
Where do fjords usually occur?
Cold environments
Where do Dalmatian coastlines form?
In areas where valleys lie parallel to each other - flooded and tops of valleys remain above sea level
