Emergency Situations Flashcards
who is a refugee and what, when and why does he do what he does.
- someone who flees from danger in his / her country.
- they leave to find shelter or protection elsewhere (a neighbouring country)
- this happens during times of civil unrest, war or natural disaster.
what does a refugee do once they have crossed the border of their country.
they seek asylum. asylum is the protection given by one country to the citizens of another country.
why do people sometimes have to leave their country and what is this called
due to disasters like flooding or fires. people are referred to as being internally displaced.
what are refugee camps
organized temporary shelters
meaning - poverty, economic crisis and xenophobia
poverty - the state of being poor, having very little income to support yourself and your family now or in the future.
economic crisis - a situation in a country / area that experiences a sudden change in its ability to support people to earn a living. business close and people lose their jobs.
xenophobia - an intense dislike or fear of people who come from other countries.
what are the 4 things that cause people to become refugees or internally displaced people and describe them.
1 - Natural disasters
the wide spread destruction of homes, farms, buildings, which has been bought about by nature. In SA floods, fires and drought are the 3 most common forms of natural disaster.
2 - Environmental deterioration
this means the place where people live can no longer support them because it has been damaged in some way. this can be bought about by many factors but it’s often caused when people haven’t taken care of the environment properly. E.g. mining or using the wrong farming methods can cause damage to the land. pollution from factories can cause the air / water to make people sick. when environment has deteriorated people usually have to move away and find somewhere new to live + work.
3 - Poverty or economic crisis
state of being poor. if people think they can’t make living where they are, they’ll move. economic crisis is sudden downturn in business - so basic necessities like bread and transport become expensive. people lose their jobs and there is shortage work. they move to where they think there are better job opportunities. often people move to city from rural areas where jobs are scarce. the city is seen as having better facilities, like schools and medical assistance. these internally displace people live in temporary shelters on outskirts of cities, where life may continue to be very hard for them.
4 - War
war causes civilian life to become dangerous, so people leave homes and go to neighbouring countries where there is no war. SA has had refugees from Angola, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
name a problem faced by refugees and describe (it) xenophobia in SA
xenophobia = strong dislike / fear of people from other countries.
refugees who cross SA border become absorbed into local communities. this has sometimes led to conflicts between different cultures and groups who live and work together. many SA people also believe refugees taking their jobs. also believe refugees reason that crime increasing.
in 2008, at least 62 people killed in series of riots and attacks on refugees throughout SA. these attacks caused local people to move and be internally displaced. they left their homes because they felt unsafe and sought shelter and protection from churches and other organisations.
