Oxygen
- most frequent drug used in a medical emergency
-ideal agent for resuscitation of a patient who is unconcscious but is still breathing is 100% oxygen
-if the patient is not breathing, air must be forced into the lungs through rescue breathing or similary emergency measures - a portable unit with tanks of oxygen may be stored where it can be moved quickly into a treatement room if needed
- tank is always colour coded green
If a patient is not breathing..
air must be adminsted through rescue breathing or similary emergency measures
Who can administer oxygen?
RDH or DDS an administer oxygen!!!
RDA can only assist
Dental assistant may not…
set, start or adjust flows and/or ratios of oxygen
-place the face mask on the patient
DA may assist with administration of oxygen by..
-preping and checking oxygen equipment
-selecting mask size and placing it on tubing
-having the patient put on the mask and adjust the fit
-tightening the tubing oncec the mask is comfortable for the patient
-assisting with observing, documenting and reporting the patient’s condition
Cannula is..
prongs that insert into nose for oxygen delivery
When to replace oxygen tank?
When lbs per sq inch is at 500
What the Oxygen Regulator does..
controls the flow of oxygen out of the tank
Oxygen Tank Tubing is for..
-used for connecing the oxygen tank at the gauge regulator to the face mask
- allows for the flow of oxygen
desired flow for oxygen?
2-6 liters per minute
When to apply mask?
Once the oxygen is flowing! putting it on before can worsen condition
Is oxygen considered a drug?
Yes - this is why an RDA cannot administer oxygen.
