Q

Procedure for Fire
(in the MR room, in the technical room, in the building)

A
  1. Abort your experiment
  2. Activate the fire alarm. Make sure to check where it is located
  3. Call 112
  4. If safe, evacuate your subject.
  5. Follow the fire emergency procedure indicated by ERO personnel. If they are not present, leave the building.
  6. Also in this case, no one should enter the MR room (with an active magnetic field) without being screened.
  7. Fireman will decide whether to quench or not.
  8. If you’re not ERO certified, do not attempt to extinguish the fire.

Q

Procedure if subject becomes unwell in the scanner room
(e.g. (suspected) panic attack, heart attack, epileptic seizure)

A
  1. call 112 if the person is non-responsive
  2. Call 2222 (security) : Tell the security to activate the BHV procedure (ERO personnel coming your way).
  3. In case of a possible heart attack start the scanner evacuation procedure.
Note: do not bring the AED into the scanner room, it is NOT MR safe.

Q

Procedure if person gets trapped by a ferromagnetic object

A
  1. Only in case of serious bodily harm: quench the magnet. A quench is effected by pressing one of the quench buttons. Make sure you know where to locate them.
  2. Call 112
  3. Call 2222 and ask for BHV assistance.
Try to determine whether or not evacuation from the scanner might (further) hurt the person.

Q

Procedure for (spontaneous) quench

A

With subject in scanner:
check for signs of helium in the room to determine whether it is safe enough to enter yourself and evacuate the subject.
- low oxygen percentage
- white clouds
- ice crystals

Without a subject in the scanner:
leave the scanner room.

In the very rare occurrence that the helium does not flow out through the quench pipe but enters the room:
1. DO NOT enter the scanner room and leave the door closed.
2. Notify ERO personnel
3. go upstairs and wait outside. ERO personnel will evacuate the affected zones.

Q

Procedure if object gets stuck to the magnet

A
  1. Abort scanning
  2. alert MRI staff
  3. if applicable evacuate subject from MR scanner room.
Do not quench the magnet! If necessary, Philips will remove the field gradually, preventing loss of helium and potential damage to the magnet.

Q

Scanner evacuation procedure

A
  1. Remove the table with the subject from the scanner (unless he or she is trapped) using the manual table button.
  2. Contact ERO personnel to help you decide whether to remove the injured person from the scanner room (in case of e.g. possible back injuries, the ERO may decide to leave the person there until emergency personnel arrives). In case the person needs to be removed from the scanner room, ERO personnel will help you carry the person from the scanner room using the rautekgrip.
  3. If the subject cannot be removed from the scanner room, the MR Operator has to make sure no one (including ambulance, hospital personnel etc.) can enter the scanner room without having been screened.
  4. If necessary, call 112.
  5. If necessary, call 2222 with the fixed phone on the desk to reach emergency services. You are in building REC L (control room: LK.03). Stay with your subject in the MR control room. They will start the BHV procedure.
  6. If possible, let one person stay with the participant. Also while calling 112/2222. If possible, one person stays at the front door to welcome emergency personnel.
