Embryonic Develoment Flashcards
Carnegie collection of embryos
standardized time points of embryo development
designated by developmental events.
goes to stage23 or day 60 when embryo becomes fetus
stage 10
embryo is visible to naked eye, day 19, 20, 21
Neural tube begins to end. represents one of the final stages of dev of cns
stage 19
day 40 or 41. embryo lengthened and torso straighter. Dev. external ear, give rise to knee joint and hip joint, and mandible.
In cleft palate, we will know at this stage
stage 23
last stage bc fetus after. head is 50 percent of size bc of rapid growth of brain and skull. Grows rapidly because receives first dibs on oxygenated blood thru maternal circulation, chin, extremities lengthening, still undifferentiated sexually
Embryonic Period
Cargniae stages
weeks 3-8
-Maximum susceptibility to developmental defects due to initiation of organ sys. development !!
- teratogens most devastating
Fetal Period
- Weeks 9-full term (40 weeks)
- Organs continue to grow/develop and increase in complexity
- Less of a chance of significant abnormalities
- not laying new foundations
- teratogens cause less damage
Post Natal Development
occurs from birht to puberty
3rd week
cardiovascular system begins to develop, 1st system to function in embryo. Somites begin to develop so beginning to develop muscullar and skeletal muscle
4th week
Primordial gut forms - if exposed to tetragens then could have bad effects on GI tract
Neurulation begins
Urogenital system begins to form
Upper and lower limbs begin to form
5th week
CSF forms
Rapid brain development - dev of giri and sulci to increase surface area
Midgut and hindgut develop
