Embryology of Cranial Nerves Flashcards
5 paired pharyngeal arches are developed in the 4th week. What are they?
1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th
The 5th rapidly regresses and the 6th is not visible externally
Where is the oral cavity formed on the embryo?
Between the frontonasal prominence and the 1st pharyngeal arch
What are pharyngeal clefts and pouches?
Each pharyngeal arch is separated by a cleft externally and opposing pouches internally
What characterises pharyngeal arches?
- Skeletal components
- Cranial nerves (cranial placodes)
- Neural crest cells
- Muscle cells
- Vessels
What are the characteristics of the frontonasal prominence?
- Consists of a medial and lateral nasal prominence
- Contributes to the development of the nose, upper lip, anterior maxilla, and palate
- Failure to fuse can form a cleft lip or midline cleft
What are the skeletal developments of the 1st pharyngeal arch?
- Maxilla
- Mechel’s cartilage
- Zygoma
- Temporal bone
- Incus and malleus of middle ear
What are the muscular developments of the 1st pharyngeal arch?
- Muscles of mastication
- Mylohyoid
- Ant. belly of digastric
- Tensor palati and tensor tympani
What are the nerve and artery developments of the 1st pharyngeal arch?
- Trigeminal nerve (CN V2 + V3)
- Maxillary artery
- External carotid artery
What are the skeletal developments of the 2nd pharyngeal arch?
- Reichert’s cartilage
- Lesser horn of hyoid bone
- Stapes of middle ear
- Styloid process
- Stylohyoid ligament
What are the muscular developments of the 2nd pharyngeal arch?
- Muscles of facial expression
- Stapedius
- Stylohyoid
- Post. belly of digastric
- Auricular muscles
What is the nerve and vessel development from the 2nd pharyngeal arch?
- Facial nerve (CN 7)
- Stapedial artery
What are the skeletal and muscular developments from the 3rd pharyngeal arch?
Skeletal = Greater horn + body of hyoid bone
Muscles = Stylopharyngeus
What is the nerve and vessel development from the 3rd pharyngeal arch?
- Glossopharyngeal nerve (CN 9)
- Common and internal carotid arteries
What are the skeletal developments of the pharyngeal arch?
- Thyroid cartilage of larynx
- Epiglottic cartilage
What are the muscular ecvelopments of the pharyngeal arches?
- Cricothyroid muscle
- Muscles of soft palate
