Embryology Flashcards
What is the protein coat on the oocyte called that the sperm must move through
Zonapaloosa
What are the enzymes on the sperm head that allow it to burrow into the zonapalooza
Acroenzymes contained in the acrosome
At what stage is the cell referred as a morula, what type of cells are contained
When it is 16 cells- totipotent
What are the 3 germ layers and what arises from them
Ectoderm (skin, nervous system)
Mesoderm (muscles like heart, urogenital systems)
Endoderm (gi tract, respiratory tract lining)
At what week does embryonic folding occur? Involving the heart formation too
Week 4
Name the respective embryological terms for top, bottom front and back
Cranial
Caudal
Ventral
Dorsal
Where does fertilisation take place?
The ampulla
Name the steps following fertilisation
Granules in oocytes released
Causes zona pellucida hardening
Prevents another sperm penetrating
Define cleavage and compaction
Cleavage is the division of cells
Compaction is where the intercellular spaces decrease by forming cellular connections using junctions. E.g cells and zona pelllucida get gap junction
What do the different parts of the blastocyte form?
Trophoblast (outer cells); placenta
Embryoblast/ amnion (inner cells); embryo
What are some usual sites of implantation?
The middle or upper dorsal uterine wall
