Embryology 2.0 Flashcards
conceptus
fertilisation to the end of week 3
embryo
fertilisation (or week 4) to week 8
foetus
week 9 to birth
7 phases of embryogenesis
- gametogenesis
- fertilisation
- cleavage
- gastrulation
- formation of body plan
- organogenesis
- foetal period
two potential processes in gametogenesis
oogenesis
spermatogenesis
describe the process of fertilisation
sperm binds to the zone pellucida and acrosomal enzymes are released from the sperm allowing it to digest its way into the egg, membranes fuse and the sperm enters the egg
describe cleavage (days 1-4)
period of rapid cell division with compaction producing the morula and then blastocyst
describe gastrulation (week 3)
formation of the germ layers (ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm), beginning marked by the primitive streak in epiblasts
normal implantation sites
middle or upper dorsal uterine wall
what day is implantation complete?
day 9
what are epiblasts associated with?
amniotic cavity
what are the hypoblasts associated with?
yolk sac
what does the ectoderm produce?
skin and nervous system
three layers of the mesoderm
paraxial
intermediate
lateral
what does the lateral mesoderm split into?
somatic
visceral
