EMBRYOLOGY Flashcards

Chapter 10

1
Q

What occurs on days 1-3 during embryological development?

A

The zygote moves to the fallopian tube, and cleavage results in marula

Q

How do twins occur regarding eggs?

A

When one fertilized egg splits into two this forms monozygotic twins aka identical. When two eggs are fertilized at the same time, this forms dizygotic twins aka fraternal.

Q

What occurs on days 4-6 during embryological development?

A

Cleavage will continue but the morula becomes hollow. The hollow space is known as the blastula. A cluster of cells will still remain.

9
Q

What occurs during implantation?

A

The morula will move to the uterus. Once it reaches the uterus it is referred to as a blastocyst. Implantation occurs when the blastocyst burrows into the mucosal uterine lining aka the endometrium

Q

What is the Decidua?

A

The decidua is the specialized layer of endometrium that forms the base of the placental bed

Q

What is the Decidua Basalis?

A

The portion of decidua where the placenta is to be formed. Endometrium deep from blastula.

Q

What is the Decidua Capsilaris?

A

The part of the decidua that separates the embryo from the uterine lumen. Endometrium surface from blastula.

Q

What is the Decidua Parietalis?

A

The part lining the rest of the uterus cavity. Endometrium absent from blastula.

14
Q

What is the difference between the Trophoblast, Blastocyst cavity, and Embryoblast?

A

All are components of a blastocyst. The trophoblast is the outer lining, the embryoblast is the inner cell mass, and the blastocyst cavity is the empty area left.

15
Q

On days 6-12, why do the trophoblasts become cytotrophoblasts?

A

To penetrate maternal spiral arteries and route the blood flow through the placenta for the growing embryo to use.

16
Q

On days 6-12, why does the endometrium become a syncytiotrophoblast?

A

To cover the entire surface of villous trees and are in direct contact with maternal blood. They are a continuous, specialized layer of epithelial cells.

17
Q

On days 6-12, why does the inner cell mass become an embryonic disc?

A

For the embryo to begin differentiating. It lies between the hypoblast layer and the amnion. It is the part of the inner cell mass of a blastocyst from which the embryo of a placental mammal develops

18
Q

What does the embryonic disc consist of? (hint: 3 layers)

A

-Endoderm (inner layer)
-Mesoderm (middle layer)
-Ectoderm (outer layer)
