Embryology Flashcards
How long is the embryonic period?
2-8 weeks
How long is the germinal period?
0-2 weeks
How long is the fetal period?
8-40 weeks
What is gastrulation?
When the embryo transforms from a bilaminar to trilaminar
What is neurulation?
Process whereby the neural plates forms the neural tube
When does closure of the cranial neuropore occur?
Day 25
When does closure of the caudal neuropore occur?
Day 28
What appears at the end of gastrulation?
Notochord (which forms to be the spinal cord)
When does brain development begin?
Day 28
What are the three main divisions of the brain?
Prosencephalon (forebrain), mesencephalon (midbrain), and rhombencephalon (hindbrain)
What are the two divisions of the prosencephalon?
Telencephalon (cerebral hemispheres) and diencephalon (thalamus, hypothalamus, and epithalamus)
What does the mesencephalon connect?
Forebrain to the hindbrain
What are the three divisions of the rhombencephalon?
Pons, medulla, and cerebellum
What is the spinal cord continuous with?
Rhombencephalon
What are somites?
Form along the sides of the neural tube and give rise to the vertebrae, muscles of the back, and dermis of the skin
What do somites develop into?
Myotomes, ventromedial sclerotomes, and dermatomes
How many pairs of somites do we have?
42-44 pairs
How long is the embryonic period?
Six weeks
What are the three layers of the cells?
Ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm
What does the endoderm form?
Digestive and respiratory systems
What does the mesoderm form?
Muscles, skeleton, circulatory system, reproductive system, and dermis
What does the ectoderm form?
CNS, PNS, eyes, ears, and outer skin
What happens during embryo week 4?
Arm and leg buds appear and the heart pumps blood
What occurs during embryo week 5?
Forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain form
