Embalming 1 Exam 4 Supplies Flashcards
Chemicals which inactivate saprophytic bacteria, render unsuitable for nutrition the media upon which such bacteria thrive and which will arrest decomposition by altering the enzymes of the body as well as converting the decomposable tissues into a form much less susceptible to decomposition
Preservative embalming chemicals
Embalming chemicals which are used on discolored areas of the body and are intended to remove the discolorations or at least lighten the intensity of the discoloration.
Do not mix bleach with the formaldehyde; not Clorox - use embalming chemical bleaches
Bleaches
Germicides employed in embalming fluids to kill microorganisms or to render them inactive; USED TO DESTROY OR INHIBIT MOST PATHOGENIC BACTERIA AND THERE PRODUCTS IN AND AROUND THE BODY, PREP ROOM, INSTUMENTS, AS WELL AS THE INDIVIDUAL PREFORMING THE EMBALMING
Disinfectant Chemicals
Liquid external or internal – prevents leakage; A compound used to provide a barrier or seal against any type of leakage of fluid or blood.
LIQUID SEALER
Dry or powder external or internal – prevents leakage
DRY SEALER
Spray external or internal – prevents leakage
SPRAY SEALER
Agent or chemical applied to surface to disinfect that surface; A compound, usually of a disinfectant nature, used to effectively clean the remains and for post-procedure (terminal) disinfection by the operator.
DISINFECTANT SOAPS
A substance, usually a liquid, capable of dissolving another substance. A substance in which another substance is dissolved, forming a solution; remove stains from the body, a cleanser for cosmetic brushes, a spot remover and a thinning agent.
SOLVANTS
Looks like cotton balls or cotton puffs
BLEACHED COTTON
Usually in rolls, more flat and compressed
COMPRESSED COTTON
Plastic for aspiration and rubber for cavity injection can be different OD and WL. Flexible and can be clear or opaque
TUBING (RUBBER OR PLASTIC)
Plastic discs inserted under the eyelid which keeps the eyelid closed and prevents the eyes from sinking into the orbit. Usually has small spike-like bumps to hold in place
EYECAPS
Threaded plastic screw used for closing trocar punctures, small punctures, surgical drain openings and IV line punctures
TROCAR BUTTONS
Or metal devices used to replace the teeth when the natural teeth or dentures are absent
MOUTH FORMERS
Typically used in autopsy cases, you will receive the internal viscera and organs in this bag
VISCERA BAGS
Used to cover the area from waist to a part of the leg to contain leakage
PLASTIC PANTS
Used to cover arms to contain leakage
PLASTIC SLEEVES
Used to contain leakage of the entire torso area
PLASTIC COVERALLS
Covers all of body except hands, head, neck, used to contain leakage
PLASTIC UNIONALLS
Used to cover feet and lower leg area to contain leakage
PLASTIC STOCKINGS
Used for cases of advanced decomposition, more heavy duty 20mil, usually black with dowel or handle
DISASTER POUCHES
Used for cases of advanced decomposition
BURIAL POUCHES
Used to cover body, or line cot for ease of movement. Can be washable or disposable
SHEETS
Used during autopsy waterproof can be disposable or washable to protect embalmer
LAB APRONS
Spool of waxed or unwaxed thread used to close or sew opening or incision
SUTURE LIGATURE
Brad used to close mouth, breast plate or skull cap with injector needle; It is inserted into a needle injector and forced into the mandible and maxilla.
INJECTOR NEEDLES (BRADS)
Used to glue shut, used to glue incisions closed; used to close incisions and wounds
works especially well on jagged tears in the skin
ADHESIVES (SUPER GLUE)
Sets up quickly; used on cases where the lips and/or eyelids are difficult to close properly.
LIP AND EYELID CEMENT (ARON ALPHA)
Typically used with spatula for restoritiv art. Can be different colors and different consistencies
WAXES
Must be filled out for every embalming case you do describing what took place, what chemicals you used, results, markings, problems, etc.
CASE REPORTS
Used to drill hole for injector needles to be used in skull cap securing
SPEED DRILL (CRANIAL)
Used to secure skull cap or breast plate; Must notch area in skull for clamps to fit head properly
A device used as a means of fastening the calvarium after a cranial autopsy
CALVARIUM CLAMPS
