Embalming 1 Exam 4 Instrument Flashcards
Straight tube used to inject arterial/embalming fluid into vascular system. WL 2 & 4 inch OD
Vascular TUBE STRAIGHT
Curved tube used to inject embalming fluid into vascular system
Vascular TUBE CURVED
Type of locking or attaching mechanism for arterial tube attachment to embalming machine
LEUR LOK ARTERIAL TUBE
Most secure mouth closure method, used for breast plate and cranial cap also. Injects brad into boney structure of upper and lower mouth to “tie” mouth shut; into bone
NEEDLE INJECTOR
2 piece/part handle and blade; blades are disposable and come in sterile packaging; make incisions & excisions
SCALPEL
Has a hole in end to allow threading around vessels. Embalming instrument used for blunt dissection and raising vessels
ANEURYSM NEEDLE-w/Hole
No hole in end can be sharp edged or not. Embalming instrument used for blunt dissection and raising vessels
ANEURYSM HOOK-w/o Hole
Scissors with two sharp pointed ends
SHARP - SHARP Utility SCISSOR
Scissors with one sharp end and one curved/dull end
SHARP - BLUNT Utility SCISSOR
Scissors with two curved/dull ends
BLUNT – BLUNT Utility SCISSOR
Flat angled blades with one sharp and one curved/dull end to easily cut bandages & clothing
Angular BANDAGE SCISSORS
Longer, usually 12 inch in length to easily remove clothing
CLOTHING OR CLOTH SCISSORS
Used to cut hair
BARBER Utility SCISSORS
Two sharp points shorter and slightly curved end to cut arteries or veins
ARTERY AND VEIN SCISSORS
For insertion into smaller vein; to direct drain tubes into troublesome vessels.
GROOVE DIRECTOR
Either ivory or rubber (white or black) used to raise diseased arteries/veins, bendable and shaped like tongue depressor; to maintain the elecation of the vessels above the surface of the skin
SEPERATOR
Maintain the elecation of the vessels above the surface of the skin; Looks like scissors with ability to lock in place. Can be straight or curved, with or without grooves on end. If for dressing the ends will be much longer
LOCK FORCEPS OR HEMOSTATS
Forceps that look like locking but with holes to clamp over artery tube inserted into artery to hold in place. Can be two holed or three holed
ARTERY FIXATION FORCEPTS
Looks like large angled tweezers, can be used for insertion into vein for drainage or if turned over it can be used for packing orifices and called packing forceps
VEIN ANGULAR SPRING FORCEPS
Looks like large tweezers, can be straight or angled, small or large; used for holding cotton swabs, wiping out and disinfecting the eyes, restoration treatment and closing the eyes
SPRING FORCEPS
Used by surgeons to keep incision open and out of way; primarily used to spread incisions and to afford more working room. It can also be used as an aid in eyecap insertion.
RETRATOR
Attached to embalming table either magnetically or suction to hold water hose or towel in place
HOSE OR TOWEL CLAMPS
Used to shave deceased, most often disposable
SHAVING DEVICES
2-parted plunger or retractor and housing or barrel. Used to establish and maintain drainage. Allows complete stoppage for pressure buildup. Can be different WL and OD; used to aid the drainage of blood from the body
VEIN DRAINAGE TUBES
Long slightly curved drain tube to use in femoral artery to go all the way to heart
ILIAC VEIN DRAINAGE TUBE
Rubber or metal. Allows a valve to close off pressure, used closer to self on tubing to allow embalmer to easily close flow; commonly used on arterial tubes to stop the flow of fluid. Always at one end or other of tubing
STOP COCKS
Sold in 6 packs with sizes from 1-6 Used to suture mouth
FULL CURVE SUTURE NEEDLES
Sold in 6 packs with sizes from 1-6 Used for incision closing
HALF CURVE SUTURE NEEDLES
Sold in 6 packs with sizes from 1-6 Most often used for suturing
THIMBLE SUTURE NEEDLES
Sold in 6 packs with sizes from 1-6 Most popular suturing needles
AUTOPSY SUTURE NEEDLES
Use hooked up to suction, slightly curved to suction out nose or mouth, curve allows you to get further into area; used to aspirate the throat by means of the nostrils.
NASAL TUBE ASPIRATOR
Used to remove fluid/blood from autopsy cases – clogging one has no holes
AUTOPSY ASPIRATOR (CLOGGING- NO HOLES)
Used to remove blood from autopsy cases – non-clogging one has holes on end
AUTOPSY ASPIRATOR (NON-CLOGGING)
Sharp pointed tip with holes for aspirate/suction of cavity area & inject fluid into cavity area. Adult is 3/8 OD and 16” WL, infant is 5/16 OD and 7” WL,
Hypovalve 5/16 OD & 16” WL
TROCARS
Used for tissue building, adults in restorative art. You could inject tissue builder if eyes are sinking in or lips need plumping
HYPODERMIC Needle/Syringe INSTUMENTS (can be disposable plastic or glass)
Used to insert trocar buttons into hole made for trocar use
TROCAR BUTTON APPLICATOR
Attaches to the cavity fluid bottle, thumb goes over the (hole) or carburetor on its side (16oz bottle); aid in injecting the cavity fluid into the various cavities of the body.
CAVITY INJECTOR
Aneurysm needle with the expander at the end – looks like small tweezers at the end
VEIN EXPANDER
used to pass a ligature underneath a raised vessel.
THREAD PASSER
Birds beak blade - safer for bones
Regular curved blade - Like a chef’s/steak knife; safer for skin and muscle
Types of blades and their Uses
An embalming instrument which is a one piece scalpel used for making incisions and excisions
Bistoury
Similar to forceps and/or tweezers
A device used to remove items from the deceased
Extractor
A device used to hypodermically inject embalming fluid into the tissues.
Hypo-valve trocar
Used for autopsies; also called a Y tube
An embalming instrument which permits embalming fluid to slow in two different directions simultaneously
Metal Y Injector
