What are the extras the ISO14001 has over EMAS III?
The extras are in chapter 4 they 4.1(understanding the context of the organization) and 4.2 understanding the needs and expectation of interested parties as well 6.1.1 ( risk and opportunities)
However EMAS updated its annexes to include all the missing part so in principal EMAS III has chapter 4-10 of IO14001.
Except that the lifecycle perspective is not as explicitly stated as it is in ISO14001
Parts of EMAS III: we begin with Article 3 . What is it about ?
Article 3 is about a competent body . A competent body is in charge of a few things under EMAs :
1. It’s in charge of registration process for organization, applications are submitted the competent body reviews and verifies information submitted in the application and when everything checks out helps the organization with registration.
2. Is in charge of withdrawal of applications , this could either be at the request of the organization or due to noncompliance.
3. The competent body also supports Small and Medium sized enterprises ( because of their size and resources) and also inform the public about EMAS
What is article 4 about ?
This article is on the preparation for registration. Here the organization must :
Do an initial environmental review
Implement and EMS
Have an internal audit
Write and publish an environmental statement( a statement that shows the organization environmental performance and activities)
Show legal compliance ( demonstrate adherence to relevant laws )

What can you say about auditing in EMAS ( article 6,7,&,8)
The below is for regular companies and companies with non complicated activities
Internal audits every year with the whole company being cover within three years (alt 4). This audit comes from the need to review environmental statements yearly. ( in ISO: audit frequency is flexible with at least once a year )
External audit: between 1-3 year (4). A new environmental statement must be made every third year .
If there is a substantial change in the companies activities then her must be an audit !
Large organizations have special arrangements. But more frequent !!
What is article 9 about ?
This the Internal environmental audit . There is an audit programme that ensures that all parts of the organization are covered in 3 year period(4 for smaller companies) . (In ISO each audit must cover the entire company ).
The auditors here should be competent and idependent auditors( should not audit their own work or areas of expertise ).
All audit written reports should lead to action plan
What is Article 10 about
This is on the EMAS logo. This logo is awarded to organization that have met all the requirements of EMAS. This label is not to be put on products as it will get mistaken for an environmental label which it is not and that would be green washing
The Annexes in EMAS . What is Annex 1 about ?
It is about Environmental review .
1. Identify applicable legal requirements related to the environment
2. Identify all environmental impacts both direct and indirect that significantly affect the environment. Includes creating significant environmental impact list.
3. Evaluation of feedback from the investigation of previous incidents.
4. Examining all existing environmental management practices and procedures.
5. Description of the criteria for assessing significant environmental aspects.

What is Annex III about ?
It is about Internal audits. This gives information about objectives,scope frequency, and how these audits should be performed , reported and followed up .
What is Annex IV about ?
Environmental reporting
