Q

Stimulus of dance

A

The music ‘Til enda by Olaf Arnold’s’ was a starting point for the piece.
The idea of emancipating expressionism (hence title) was another starting point. The importance of being free and to be able to express ourselves both as individuals through hip hop movement vocabulary are central Kendricks initial ideas for the work.

Q

Choreographic intention

A

Wants the audience to feel that they are witnessing and sharing an emotional journey and revolution through the piece. And to be able to appreciate hip hop dance as an art form.
Each section is a scene, a movement in life, and the whole work is a journey.
The theme of order and chaos highlights the restrictions of an individual style of hip hop dance.
He wants to create a sense of chaos in contrast with the potential limitations of set styles, he wants to break through these styles. Often individual dances would break out of an ensemble to represent this whilst everyone else is in unison.

Costuming

A

Designed to represent the company- causal, enhance the shape of the dancer, create a clean look.
The dancers wore short sleeves pastel blue t-shirts, blue denim jeans and grey trainers with white soles.
Kendrick wanted the dancers hair tied back where necessary to ensure facial expression was seen.
Some dancers wore jewellery to enhance individuality and every day qualities.

A

Original production and arrangement by Michael Mikey J
November composed by max richter
Til enda composed by olafur arnalds
The music shifts from urban drum beats and electronic sounds to a modern classical composition (November and til enda). This development portrays the journey he wanted the audience to go on with him.
Music has many accents and is multilayered, Kendrick writes out symbols in his notes so ensure the movements compliment particular sounds
