A

To free serfs from the nobles in order to help make Russia better.

How were the nobles effected by emancipation?

A
  • lost their authority as that was based around serfdom
  • not compensated enough, so they had to sell their land and homes to pay off debts
  • stopped them from counter acted radical groups, as they had no power or money
  • left generally unprepared for life after serfdom

How were the serfs effected by emancipation?

A
  • made little change to their lives
  • they had to buy their land, with prices that were unaffordable
  • they had to take loans from banks with excessive interest rates.
  • caused riots as they felt they owned the land and they shouldn’t have to buy it.
  • made them financially tied to the land.

A
  • trans- Siberian railway was built to improve transport of coal, iron, gold and textiles
  • allowed serfs to leave their Mir and find work else where
  • liberated serfs giving them freedom
  • made a stagnant society start to reform
