ELM 3.1 Flashcards
1
Q
What does the Nernst equation do in biology (and what was it originally formed to do)?
A
Was originally formulated to describe the behaviour of electrochemical cells (batteries) - but in biological systems it predicts when an electrical gradient (E) and chemical gradient are in balance
2
Q
What ions are most permeable when the membrane is at rest?
A
potassium
3
Q
Using Nernst, what value will Ek be in a cell that has equal concentrations of potassium ions inside and outside the cell?
A
0 mV (ratio of concentration is 1, and log(1) =0)
