What was the act of supremacy, 1559?

A

Liz was confirmed as the head of church of England with the title of ‘supreme governor’. All officials had to swear an oath of loyalty accepting this.

What was the act of uniformity, 1559?

A

Ensured that services were followed the same way. The protestant Book of Common Prayer used in all churches with the bible services in English. Clergy had to swear an oath to use the Prayer Book. Those who didn’t attend church were fined.

A

*Condemn Catholic practices
*Identify recusants to the Privy council & local JP’s
*Fine recusants each time they are absent.
*Ensure uniformity of practice.

A

*125 commissioners tour the country to make sure the clergy were following the rules.
*Over 400 clergy resigned or were sacked between 1559 & 1564. Over half were Catholic.
