A

30-60 per county. Usually wealthy country gentlemen. Unpaid, but did their job out of duty and status in community. Had to administer poor law relief as well as maintain law and order.

A

Parish constables & night-watchmen duties included preventing poaching & arrest law breakers. Overseer of the poor had to collect tax and give to those most in need.
