How did Elizabeth make a compromise for Catholics and Protestants
She made a ‘middle way’ and still kept some Protestant and Catholic traditions as she didn’t want to cause any chaos.
How did Elizabeth deal with poverty?
In 1601 she made an Act for the Relief of the Poor which was when some of the taxes people paid went to the poor.
What rules did Elizabeth make for the parliament?
They could not have a meeting unless Elizabeth wanted it to happen which meant that they could not talk about important things behind her back.
Did Elizabeth have a heir?
She did not have a heir as she didn’t marry even though parliament wanted her to.
When did The Spanish Armada happen?
It happendn in 1588.
What was the Spanish Armada?
The king of Spain (king Phillip II) created a naval army of 130 ships and wanted to invade England.
What was England’s plan to defend?
They sent out around 60 ships (around half the size of the Spanish ships) to fight against the Spanish.
Why did Phillip want to attack England?
Because for many years English sailors had been stealing gold and silver from Spanish ships.
Wha happened in the battle?
The weather went against the Spanish forcing them to go all the way round Britain. This meant it was easier for England to attack causing them to retreat and they made sure they had to flee by stealing their supplies.
Why did the Spanish fail?
They had a very inexperienced side compared to England’s experienced sailors and better naval tactics
What happens after the battle?
As the Spanish retreated a storm psuhed them round Scotland and Ireland and their ships got completely battered causing them to get on to land only to be attacked by Scottish and Irish.
Why was Elizabeth angry at Phillip?
He married Mary, Queen of Scots to help her become Queen of England.
What did the English do to attack the Spanish?
They sent in fireships to burn the Spanish ships. The Spanish were very frightened by this.
